Wanderlust has always driven me out into the wide world, so I traveled to a wide variety of countries and cultures.

However, I loved playing host just as much, and received my friends in my home all too often.

So the idea of opening a guest house somewhere in the world was not far off.

25 years ago I was still toying with the idea of opening a campsite in Spain

but I hadn't seen much of the world then.

After that, my passion for travel really got going, traveling to more and more distant countries and making plans every time how it would look like to live in that country and build a small hostel.

Many plans were made, worked out and discarded again because of one or the other adversity.

It should be the perfect place to put all your sweat, savings and love!

In winter 2018 I did my big tour of Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, USA, St. Martin and sailed from there with a catamaran across the Atlantic to the Azores. On this trip I discovered the small and very poor country of Belize and immediately fell in love with the Caribbean way of life and the wonderful nature. I immediately set about researching the conditions that are crucial for foreigners to run a business and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to deal with there as a European.

My country was found!

Back home I started working like crazy and saved up some money. The plan was to travel to Belize again next year with the perspective of living there and finding a place that I like and where I will be accepted.

In 2019, again in winter, I flew to Belize for two months and looked at different areas.

As small as the country may be, it is also multifaceted. Since I am a very nature-loving person, I was looking for a small jungle where I would like to change as little as possible and where my hostel would be integrated into the forest.

It is also due to this love of nature that everything is built from recycled materials as much as possible.

This is how the bedrooms are set up in disused buses which are lounging around in heaps in the junkyard.

Cisterns are to be built for the showers in order to use the rainwater.

The electricity is to be generated by solar and wind power itself.

And much much more.

Anyone who knows me knows that I can use everything two or three times and unfortunately the sea washes new material ashore every day.

The latest idea I heard was an unprecedented project that I really want to implement. This allows you to process collected plastic or PET yourself into any raw material. Then there is a 3D printer and there is already a new task for all the plastic waste.

It's relatively easy for me to build such simple machines myself and inspire people to do it. Of course, I will of course use the funds to pave various paths on my property, to build houses or whatever.

The beaches are full of valuable raw material.

 

And then there was sleepy little Hopkins of about 1000 people in the southern Stann Creek District, home to the Garifuna, one of Belize's indigenous groups.

Hopkins was recently voted the friendliest place in Belize by Belize First Magazine, and you can tell right away when you arrive at the bus terminal.

Here I found what I was always looking for.

 

Schon immer trieb mich das Fernweh in die weite Welt hinaus und so bereiste ich die verschiedensten Länder und Kulturen.

Allerdings spielte ich genau so gerne den Gastgeber und empfing meine Freunde in meinem Hause nur allzu oft.

So lag der Gedanke nicht fern ein Gästehaus irgendwo auf der Welt zu eröffnen.

Vor 25 Jahren spielte ich noch mit dem Gedanken einen Campingplatz in Spanien zu eröffnen

aber da hatte ich noch nicht viel von der Welt gesehen. 

Danach ging meine Reiseleidenschaft erst richtig los, reiste in immer entferntere Länder und schmiedete jedes mal Pläne wie es in jenem Land aussehen würde zu leben und sich ein kleines Hostel aufzubauen.

Viele Pläne wurden gemacht, ausgetüftelt und wieder verworfen wegen den ein oder anderen Widrigkeiten. 

Es sollte schon der perfekte Ort sein um all seinen Schweiß, erspartes und Liebe hinein zu geben!

2018 im Winter machte ich dann meine große Tour über Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, USA, St.Martin und segelte von dort aus mit einem Catamaran über den Atlantik zu den Azoren. Auf dieser Reise entdeckte ich das kleine und sehr arme Land Belize und verliebte mich sofort in die Karibische Lebensart und die wundervolle Natur. Sofort machte ich mich daran die Bedingungen zu recherchieren welche ausschlaggebend sind für Ausländer um ein Gewerbe zu betreiben und war positiv überrascht wie einfach man das dort als Europäer händeln kann.

Mein Land war gefunden!

Wieder zuhause fing ich an zu arbeiten wie blöde und sparte mir etwas Geld an. Der Plan war im nächsten Jahr nochmal nach Belize zu Reisen mit dem Blickwinkel dort zu Leben und einen Ort zu finden der mir gefällt und in dem ich auch angenommen werde. 

2019, wieder im Winter, flog ich dann für zwei Monate nach Belize und sah mir verschiedene Gegenden an.

So klein das Land auch sein mag, so facettenreich ist es auch. Da ich ein sehr naturverbundener Mensch bin suchte ich nach einem kleinen Dschungel an dem ich so wenig wie möglich verändern möchte und mein Hostel in den Wald quasi integrieren würde.

Eben dieser Liebe zur Natur ist es auch geschuldet alles so gut es geht aus recycelten Materialien zu bauen. 

So werden die Schlafräume in ausgedienten Bussen eingerichtet welche dort zu hauf auf dem Schrottplatz rumgammeln.

Für die Duschen sollen Zisternen errichtet werden um das Regenwasser zu nutzen.

Der Strom soll mittels Solar- und Windkraft selbst erzeugt werden.

Und vieles vieles mehr.

Wer mich kennt weis das ich alles zwei oder dreimal verwenden kann und das Meer spült leider täglich neues Material an Land.

Als neueste Idee  kam mir ein beispielloses Projekt zu Ohren welches ich unbedingt umsetzen möchte. Damit kann man gesammeltes Plastik oder PET selbst zu beliebigem Rohstoff verarbeiten. Dazu kommt dann noch ein 3D Drucker und schon findet sich für den ganzen Plastikmüll eine neue Aufgabe.

Solche einfachen Maschinen baue ich relativ einfach selbst und begeistere die Menschen dafür. Selbstredend werde ich natürlich die Mittel nutzen um auf meinem Gelände diverse Wege zu pflastern, Häuser zu bauen oder was auch immer. 

Die Strände sind voll von wertvollem Rohstoff.

 

Und dann kam ich das kleine verschlafene Hopkins mit seinen rund 1000 Einwohnern im südlichen Stann Creek District in welchem die Garifuna , einer der Gruppen von Belizes Ureinwohner, zuhause sind.

Hopkins wurde zuletzt vom Belize First Magazine zu  dem freundlichsten Ort in Belize gekürt und das merkt man auch direkt wenn man am Busterminal ankommt.

Hier fand ich wonach ich schon immer suchte.
